Horse racing dates way back to the time f the Roman Empire. Today, many many years later, it is a sport that still stands tall as a symbol of regality and power. The sport has seen some changes over the years. Many records have been set and many have been broken. The 1918 Kentucky Derby- Exterminator’s unexpected triumph

Among one of the most exciting and racy matches that will remain in the memories of all horse racing fans is the 1918 Kentucky Derby. This was one of the most intense races in horse racing history that ended in a resounding victory for exterminator. And while it has been a long long time since 1918, this race remains to be one that is viewed by fans, bookies and patrons from the world over. One of the reasons why this win was so exciting and remains in the memories of the horse racing community is because this win was in many ways a contradiction of sorts. Exterminator had many aliases. He was called Galloping Hat Rack or Old Bones, because there was no hiding the fact that he was not a very handsome horse. And as a result of the way he looked, no one expected much from him. And so his win came as a surprise and became a moment that changed the way people looked at horse racing. It underlined the nature of the sport as a very unpredictable and volatile one.

Horse Racing Records: the Breeder’s Cup

Man O’ War … A Tribute to Greatness

He was born on March 29, 1917, lived to the age of thirty and passed away as the result of an ailing heart on November 1, 1947. Upon his passing, he was “laid in state” inside an open casket that bore his racing colors. It is said that more than 2,000 mourners passed his casket for one last look and one final good-bye. His name was Man O’ War and he is arguably one of the greatest thoroughbred race horses of all time. His career lasted 22 races, most of which took place in 1919 and 1920. He won twenty-one of those races and finished in second place in the race he did not win.

Quashed and Omaha in the Gold Cup

There are several moments that horse racing has given us fans over the years. These incredible moments have impacted the sport in a large way and are largely responsible for the image that the sport has built over the years.  

One such race is the extremely competitive, edge- of-your-seat race between Omaha, winner of the US Triple Crown in 1935, and the filly Quashed, winner of the Oaks that year.

Grundy v/s Bustino

Another race that has created quite an impact on the horseracing fraternity is the clash between Grundy and Bustino in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. This race was a true conflict of the generations between the Derby and Irish Derby winner Grundy who happend to be the top three year old in Europe competing against Bustino, the top four-year-old, with a top-class supporting cast.

The show was an exciting and nerve racking one right from the very beginning.  The race was run at a lightning speed from the very start. It shook down to a head-to-head all the way up the straight. The excitement among the crowds was at its peak.

Horse races are known for their excitement and edge of the seat thrill. Picking a horse that is most likely to take you to the finish line before anyone else, placing your money on that horse and then going on to win the race are some of the reasons that bring racing fans to this sport time and again. Triple Crown Legends

Of all the records and ways to break them, the Triple Crown is still the definitive category by which most thoroughbreds are judged over time. To win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont is the horse racing equivalent to winning three prizefights back to back to back again. There is no way to briefly summarize all the effort and energy that goes into creating a great race contender, let alone a proven and re-proven champion.
